If you’re searching for a frugal minded, easy to make, and non-toxic cleaner, these homemade all-purpose cleaners are a great alternative to conventional cleaners. Made with only a few ingredients, each recipe works well and will get your home clean!
Breathing in toxic fumes was my reality when using conventional products. I knew that using non-toxic ingredients was essential for creating a healthier home for my family. Therefore, making my own non-toxic cleaning products was the solution.
Three Non-Toxic All-Purpose Cleaner Recipes
Non-toxic ingredients are common and budget friendly. When making your own recipes, there are always a number of things to consider. Below are three recipes for non-toxic all-purpose cleaners: a vinegar based cleaner, a cleaner without vinegar, and a deep cleaning recipe.
If you don’t enjoy the smell of vinegar, there are options for you! However, I prefer the vinegar cleaner as it offers the best cleaning ability. The deep cleaning recipe works really well in sinks, showers and tubs too.
Non-Toxic All-Purpose Cleaner with Vinegar
Vinegar is a great addition to a cleaning product. It has been known to disinfect, but is also great at removing grease and getting rid of smells. If you’re looking for a basic all-purpose cleaner, this one is non-toxic and safe for use around kids and pets.
Ingredients and Items:
- distilled water
- white vinegar
- essential oils – I purchase mine from Simply Earth.
- Spray Bottle – glass is needed when using essential oils. High quality essential oils will degrade plastic, so be sure to use glass if you add essential oils.
Fill your sprayer with 1/2 distilled water, 1/2 white vinegar and 10-20 drops of essential oils. I like to use lemon essential oils or any citrus based essential oils as it really smells great.
When using essential oils, it is important to use caution and only use oils that are 100% pure and authentic. I purchase essential oils from Simply Earth, they offer high quality essential oils at reasonable prices.
Non-Toxic Deep Cleaning Recipe
Mixing hydrogen peroxide and vinegar is not recommended by everyone. However, I find that this mixture is the most potent and best option for getting rid of stains, grease and smells. Use this on non-porous surfaces for deep cleaning.
Ingredients and Items:
- white vinegar
- hydrogen peroxide
- 1 Tbsp blue dawn dish soap
- Spray Bottle – since this recipe does not include essential oils you can use a plastic spray bottle if you’d like, unless you want to use a glass bottle for eco-friendly reasons.
Fill your sprayer with 1/2 hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 white vinegar and 1 tablespoon of dawn dish soap. Mix by shaking and use!
Hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching agent and if you use it on fabrics, it can bleach it out. I have not had experiences with this, but I know that’s a general concern when using hydrogen peroxide.
Non-Toxic All-Purpose Cleaner without Vinegar
Ingredients and Items:
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp liquid Castile soap – I use Dr. Bronner’s unscented. There are other scent options you can choose too!
- Distilled Water
- Spray Bottle
Fill your sprayer with 2 tsp of baking soda and 1 tsp of liquid Castile soap and mix gently to combine. Fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water and mix.

I love this! I am also looking for better, safer ways to clean – that actually clean! 😉 We have 4 kids in the house ranging from 2 to 14 and a husky so ‘family friendly and pet friendly’ is super important to us. I have started using lavender in my cleaning products – not only does it smell yummy, it promotes relaxation. 😉 It’s a win-win for our busy house.

This has been my go-to for years! Yes, I still use bleach on occasion, but I can use this for basically everything. And the best part is, it’s super cheap!

This stuff is amazing! The hydrogen peroxide bleaches out the stains safely. I also make a second batch & add isopropyl alcohol to the mix. This makes removing baked-on grease from stoves that much easier, Isopropyl alcohol is relatively non-toxic, compared to alternative solvents, and it is used widely as a solvent and cleaning fluid, especially for dissolving oils.
