Making your own hygiene products is a great way to remove toxins from your home. This non-toxic Lavender Sugar Scrub is easy to make and, by using coarse sugar, is a great option to help remove dead skin cells and callouses. I use this sugar scrub on my hands and feet.

How to Make Your Own Lavender Sugar Scrub

Lavender is an awesome essential oil for sugar scrubs because it has a natural calming affect to the skin. When scrubbing away dead skin cells and callouses, the roughness of the sugar can be a bit agitating to the skin. Lavender is a great addition because it helps calm the skin and reduce irritation.

Using Essential Oils

It is incredibly important to practice caution when using essential oils. Although lavender is a pretty safe oil to use, many oils can cause irritation and burning if they come into contact directly with the skin. Always use caution.

Be sure to use high quality essential oils as well. I buy my essential oils from Simply Earth. They offer 100% essential oils, from sustainably sourced regions. It’s important to only use high quality oils when making your own products, especially when those products come in contact with your skin.

How to Prepare the Lavender Sugar Scrub

In just a few simple steps, you can make your own sugar scrub with a soft and sweet lavender scent.

Step 1

Melt 1/4 of solid coconut oil (or Shea butter), in a double boiler. You can also melt is in the microwave using 15 second intervals until the coconut oil is completely melted.

Step 2

Add 1 Tbsp of Fractionated Coconut oil (or Almond Oil), along with the 30 drops of Lavender Essential oil. Be sure that the coconut oil (or shea butter) does not harden before you get to step 3. If your mixture hardens, heat the mixture slowly until just melted.

Step 3

Add 1 cup of coarse sugar and mix until fully combined. Pour mixture into a small canning jar or glass jar.

How to Use the Sugar Scrub

Sugar scrub should be kept in a sealable container and exposed to as few additives as possible. The best way to coop sugar scrub is with a spoon, instead of you fingers. This keeps oils and water (if you’re in the bath) out of the jar.

When using the sugar scrub, be sure to scrub your feet or hands in a circular motion, when wet. This will allow the sugar to remove the old skin and allow for the beautiful skin underneath to emerge.

Other Benefits of Using a Sugar Scrub

Boosts Circulation – The exfoliation of the skin boosts circulation in those areas. This is great for hands and feet because they tend to get cold.

Skin Softening – The removal of dead skin cells allows the beautiful, new skin underneath to shine through. You’ll notice softer, more radiant skin. This is a wonderful attribute for hands and feet, which tend to be some of the roughest areas of the body.

Relaxation and Stress Relief – Lavender essential oil is known for it’s calming affect. Not only will it calm your skin of any irritation caused by the exfoliation of the sugar scrub, but you’ll also notice a general calming affect in your muscles and joints. As the skin absorbs the lavender essential oil, your body also enjoy the benefits.
