Floods can be devastating. Whether these are caused by nature, or a burst pipe, flooding can be dangerous and damaging. If you’re experiencing a flood in your home and you are unsure on how to deal with it, below are some tips to help you manage minor flood damage.

How to Manage Minor Flood Damage In Your Home

The dangers when flooding can range from a mild inconvenience to complete home destruction. If it’s a major flooding emergency, the best approach is to get to higher ground in a safe location. If you’re dealing with minor flooding issues, this guide will help you navigate how to deal with the issues involved.

Try Not To Panic

One of the most important things to remember when it comes to dealing with a flood at home is that you shouldn’t panic. Although it can be quite overwhelming and stressful, staying calm can help you approach this big issue in the best possible way.

Although it can be overwhelming, it’s important to be as level headed as possible. Consider tips and tricks when it comes to staying calm in a stressful situation, to help you remain calm as you assess the situation.

Ensure Young Children And Pets Are Kept Safe

Ensure children and pets are kept out of harms way at all times. Whether this means taking them to another location or making them stay upstairs, their safety is important. Once they have been removed from the situation, it’s much easier to focus on the flooding issue.

See If You Can Contain It On Your Own

Sometimes flooding can be due to a burst pipe or lack of sealant in a window well. If you’re able to see where the leak or flood is coming from, it’s worth it to try and contain the leak on your own until you are able to call in a professional.

Although this most likely won’t fix the problem immediately, getting the water to stop flowing is the first step to managing the flooding. This allows time to figure out how to fix the leak, or where sealant is needed in the area.

Call For Assistance

Once you have stopped the water, it’s best to assess the situation and decide if outside help is needed. Depending on the level of damage, this will mean either calling a repairman or the emergency services.

Consider the type of person you need to call for the situation at hand. If you have a burst pipe, you’ll need to call a plumber. For basement flooding, you’ll most likely need a foundation repair company.

Be as specific about the issue as possible so they can come prepared. From protective clothing to Tsurumi submersible pumps, they need to know what they need to bring or access once they’re at your house.

Remove Any Valuable Items From The Flooded Area

Once the water had stopped and a repairman is on the way, be sure to move all valuables out of the way. Although it won’t guarantee their protection from any damage, it can mitigate a lot of potential damage.

Additional Thoughts

Be proactive.  If your basement has flooding in the past, it will most likely happen again. Call a company to get your basement waterproofed. Check old pipes, drainage pathways outdoors, and downspouts to ensure that water is flowing away from the home.

Many flooding issues are caused by bad drainage around the home. The best way to manage minor flood damage in your home is to avoid it altogether.
