Create These Easy and Fun DIY Chalk Painted Pots

Terra cotta pots are cheap and easy to find. One fun way to dress them up, is to give them a beautiful painted makeover. So how do you do it so that the paint stays, and without using harsh paints with toxic chemicals? Using chalk paint is a great option!

Gathering Your Materials

There are a few items you’ll need in order to create these beautifully painted pots.

  • Chalk Paint – I use Country Chic Chalk Paint, in a variety of colors. This chalk paint is eco-friendly and non-toxic, so it’s safe for the environment and around kids and pets!
  • Artist Brushes – I also used Country Chic’s Brushes for this job because their brushes work so well and last forever. Make sure to care for your brushes so that they last!
  • Terra Cotta Pots – Pick these pots up at any hardware store, or even at Walmart or Target. You can also purchase them online.
  • Acrylic Sealant Spray – I like to use the high gloss option because it leaves your project looking shiny and beautiful!

That’s it! This project is fast, and can be completed in less than 24 hours! This makes it a perfect last minute gift too!

Getting Started

Be sure to put all your chalk paint colors in separate small containers so that they do not contaminate the original can of paint. I laid them out nicely on the table with butcher paper underneath, so my children could see all the colors and switch paints easily. The butcher paper protected the table so that paint didn’t get on the furniture.

Be sure to paint only the outside of the pot as the inside will be filled with dirt and not visible.

Painting the Pots

There is no wrong way to paint the terra cotta pots. In this example I used a myriad of colors ranging from pink, green, red and yellow. I wanted to encourage my children to be creative and paint what they thought would look nice.

My oldest decided to paint strawberry bushes on his pot and utilized red and green. My daughter decided to paint flowers all over the side of her pot because she wanted it to look pretty.

My youngest son, who is only 3, mixed all the paints together and used a ton of paint on the pot. It didn’t look great but he loved painting it himself and I was so proud of the hard work he put in.

Sealing the Painted Pots

Once my children had completed the painted pots, we set them out to dry overnight. Chalk paint needs to dry for at least an hour. However, because my children were very heavy-handed with the paint, I needed to wait a little bit longer before sealing them.

After they were completely dry, I laid them out on a piece of newspaper in the backyard and used Mod Podge Acrylic Sealer to seal the painted pots.

Be sure to wait at least 15 minutes between coats, but use at least three coats. This will give it the protection to paint needs from watering plants. It also ensures that the pots are nice and glossy once completed.

The Final Product

Once the sealant had dried, you are free to plant container loving plants into your pots! For this project, we planted herbs so we could enjoy them indoors all year long.

These DIY chalk painted terra cotta pots are an easy, kid-friendly craft, that can be enjoyed for a long time.
