Making Your Own Homemade Pie Crust is Easy!

As the holidays quickly approach, so does pie season! There is nothing more scrumptious than homemade pie. The real difference between a delicious pie, and an absolute knock-out pie is definitely a homemade pie crust! When the crust tastes just as delicious as the pie, there isn’t a bite left on the plate.

The Secret to a Perfect Pie Crust

Pie crust is easy to make once you get the hang of it, but the best way to make a great pie crust is to use ice cold ingredients. The colder your butter and chilled water, the better.

Also, be sure not to overwork the pie crust them mixing and then forming the pie crust. Overworked pie dough leads to a tough pie crust. If you want buttery and flakey crusts, work your dough until just combined.

What four ingredients do you need to make a pie crust?

  1. 1 cup of flour
  2. 1/8 tsp of salt
  3. 1/4 cup of cold water
  4. 1/2 cup of butter, shortening or lard

This is seriously the easiest recipe, so please, whenever someone says homemade, just know that this is a very easy and delicious recipe.

*Quick Note – if you only have salted butter one hand, just omit the salt and it will turn out just fine!

Step 1 – Combining Ingredients:

Combine all four ingredients in a large mixing bowl. The butter should be cut into tiny cubes. You can also use a cheese grater and grate your butter before mixing. Be sure that all the ingredients are very cold while mixing.

Step 2 – Mixing the Dough:

Mix on medium or by hand until all ingredients form a dough that is similar to cookie dough. Do not overwork the dough or it will come out tough. If you’re searching for a flakey dough, be sure to only mix until all ingredients are the consistency of cookie dough.

Step 3 – Chilling the Dough:

Chill in the refrigerator for an hour or so. You can chill it overnight as well. If you want to freeze the dough for later use, you can wrap your dough in saran wrap and then place it into a ziploc bag. The dough will stay delicious for about 6 months.

Step 4 – Form the Pie Crust:

Once chilled, form into a ball and begin rolling out evenly to form a pie crust. Pie crust needs to stay cold in order to keep its form, so be sure not to do with in a warm environment.
